The Masters is Unquestionably the Best Major!

 What is the Best Major?

This is probably a somewhat controversial and probably unpopular opinion from somebody who is from Scotland, but I think that The Masters is better than The Open and is the best major on the golfing calendar.

History of the Championship

The course was founded by the legendary Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts in 1933 and hosted the masters for the first time in 1934. The tournament was originally called The Augusta National Invitation Tournament, but the name was changed to The masters in 1939. The first Tournament was won by Horton Smith who took home $1500 which is roughly around $30,000 in today’s money, most modern-day golfers wouldn’t even get out of bed for that type of figure.

Iconic Moments

The championship has created some of the most unforgettable moments in golf. Spieth’s gut-wrenching collapse in 2016 is a prime example of how the course and the pressure of the tournament can get the better of even the very best players in the world. An ageing Jack Nicklaus’s iconic win against a phenomenal field in 1986 is a far more pleasurable memory than Spieth’s collapse and epitomised the great man.

The greatest Masters Moment in my opinion, however, is Tiger Wood's win in 2019. Despite the controversies created by his, let's just call them extra-curricular activities, it was an amazing and emotional sight seeing the best golfer of all time back on top. Below is a link to tiger winning so you can relive that amazing moment.

Amen Corner

The 11th, 12th and 13th holes at Augusta National or “Amen Corner” is the most iconic and special stretch of golf holes on the planet and are a massive reason why this golf course and championship is so amazing. The championship can be won or lost on this stretch and includes particularly hard shots on every hole. The second shot on the long and challenging 11th, the tee shot over Rae’s Creek on the par 3 12th and the tee shot on the reachable par 5 13th are some of the most difficult on the course and can make or break a player's back nine. Below is a video that provides a tour around Amen Corner.

Why The Masters is the Best Major

There is just something about Augusta, the traditions, the green jacket, the indescribable beauty of the course and the way it looks so unbelievable on the TV. It’s the only major to be played at the same course every year so you know every detail of every hole and can so easily imagine yourself in these guys' shoes. Why is it the best? I don’t know it's just Special.

The Masters is on this week, so sit down with a your favourite beverage and watch the greatest golf tournament in the world
