Can Professional Golf be Improved?
Can Professional Golf be Improved?
In my opinion, yes it can. Golf is the best sport on the planet read my blog linked below to understand why I think that. Saying that, however, the product that we see on the tv can be improved.
Why Should we Look at Improving Professional Golf?
Simply put the more eyes on the game the better it is for everyone involved. I understand that golf is not for everyone but there are definitely steps that could be taken to create a better, more exciting product for people to consume.
Change the Format of Tournaments!
As a golf lover, I personally enjoy the four day long tournaments but I can understand why new or more casual viewers could be turned away by this. The current four-day tournament system requires a substantial amount of time to be spent watching the tournament, time many people don't have which could discourage them from watching. Perhaps golfing tours could look at implementing one/two day tournaments sporadically throughout the year to encourage more people to sit down and watch. A shortened tournament would unquestionably add excitement as well, the pros would have one shot at it, so it would be all or nothing, they would attack every pin and go for every putt.
Pace of Play
How many times have you heard non-golf fans saying "this is too slow and boring". I understand that professional golfers are playing for a lot of money, but sometimes the pace of play is ridiculous. The various tours should look at perhaps implementing maximum round times and implement shot fines for slow play. I mean sometimes it feels like the player and their caddy are deliberating over how to create world peace, when in fact they are hitting a 6-foot putt, which they end up missing by the way.
Bryson DeChambeau and JB Holmes are the first names that come to mind when thinking about slow play, they have both received justified criticism, slow play is not good for the game. Faster play means more enjoyable golf to watch!
Linked here is a video by Golfing world which shows various pros and ex pros opinions on slow play-Is Slow Play Ruining Golf? | Inside The Game | Golfing World - YouTube
I encourage everyone who agrees with my viewpoint surrounding this subject to use the power of social media, to start discussions about improving professional and try and influence the tours to implement change.
